MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES

What is Jefferson Community School?

Jefferson Community School is Louisiana’s first charter school.  Founded in 1996, its mission is to educate at-risk middle school students, who have been expelled from Jefferson’s public schools.

Where is JCS?

Jefferson Community School is located at 3528 Montford St, off Shrewsbury Road. It is near the intersection of Jefferson Highway and Causeway Blvd.

What is a mentor?

Mentors are adult volunteers who can play a supportive role in the development of students. As part of the school’s aggressive approach to provide optimal growth opportunities for its students, the school strives to match each student with a positive adult role model.

Who can mentor?

Any interested adult who successfully completes the application and police background check.

What is the time commitment?

We ask that you have contact with your mentee at least every other week, but ideally once a week.  Mentors may come on any school day, during regular school hours.  We do not encourage or approve of off-campus contact.

Do I have to tutor? Tutoring is not part of the mentoring process.

What is the application process?

The application process consists of two forms. One supplies personal contact information; the other authorizes a police background check.

How can I receive an application?

Contact the Jefferson Community School, 836-0808.
